Sue C. Holmes

Sue C. Holmes of Moosup, Connecticut passed away October 28, 2021. Sue was born December 26, 1945 in Elwood, Indiana to Lucinda and Lavon Heflin. Sue grew up on the family’s dairy farm with her brothers. Sue married John Holmes in 1974 and the couple raised their family in North Scituate, Rhode Island. She attended Purdue University and the University of Rhode Island where she earned her teaching credentials. She found her calling as a Family and Consumer Science teacher, teaching in the city of Warwick for many years. Upon her retirement, she and John built and moved into their dream home in Urbana, Indiana where they were able to reconnect with Sue’s family and childhood friends. They also met and became close with many new friends. They spent many evenings on their patio looking out over their scenic property. Sue recently moved to Moosup to be closer to her grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play sports, and teaching them to sew. True to her role as a Family and Consumer Scientist, Sue enjoyed cooking and sharing meals with friends and family. However, she hated peas and arugula and would complain loudly if they were part of any meal. She was also passionate about quilting, spending her time planning quilts and learning new techniques. Sue showed her love to many friends and family members by gifting them personalized quilts for milestones in their lives. Along with her role as a teacher, Sue supported youth programs in her role as a 4-H volunteer. She is predeceased by her husband John, son Sean and brothers Max (Peggy) and James (Loretta) Heflin of Indiana. She is survived by her daughters Meghan (Jesse Koslow) and Michaela (Aaron) Ware, her stepdaughter Donna (Craig) Freeman and her grandchildren Ryan (Joanna) and Matthew (Alayna) Freeman, Hannah Whitford, Moira and Sally Ware. Calling hours will be held at Winfield and Sons Funeral Home in North Scituate from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10. A reception to follow at 9 Pole Bridge Road in North Scituate. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to causes close to Sue’s heart Rhode Island 4-H Foundation Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island (Gifts will be split between local and national organizations.)
