Lawrence E. Hicks Sr.

Lawrence E. Hicks Sr. 92, of Riverside passed away Wednesday August 4, 2021 at the Cedar Crest Nursing Center. He was the beloved husband to Gloria E. (Olson) Hicks, his beloved wife for 61 years., the son of the late Howard C. and Sadie (Lyons) Hicks. Larry was a commercial truck driver employed by H.P. Hood for 39 years and Ocean State Dairy for 7 years. As a young man, he worked at the pony barn at Crescent Park where he exercised the ponies along the beach towards Sabin Point. Larry was also a Korean War veteran, serving in the United States Army from 1950-1952. After basic training, he was deployed to Korea where he drove trucks used to haul material required to build the Armed Forces air strip. Larry also enjoyed the sport of kings and was a frequent spectator at Narragansett track and Lincoln Park where he was a known handicapper. He was an excellent golfer and with his wife Gloria, enjoyed playing in multiple leagues and the many golf courses in the area, as well as Cape Cod. Larry and Gloria were members of the Sun Valley Country Club and Silver Spring Golf course, where he won club champion 8 times. He also recorded aces (hole in one), at Bristol Golf course and Silver Spring golf course. Above all, Larry loved spending time with his family, especially his wife Gloria. They enjoyed ballroom dancing, bowling, dining out, and attending sporting events for their children and grandchildren. Larry was predeceased by his wife Gloria, and is survived by his beloved children, Kathleen A. Banigan and her husband John of Riverside RI., Lawrence E. Hicks Jr. of Bristol RI., and Stephen C. Hicks and his wife Kelly of Barrington RI. In addition survived by his grandchildren, Kyle L. Hicks and his wife Alisha of Bristol RI., Erin (Banigan) Houle of Riverside RI., Lyndsey (Hicks) Urban and her husband Matthew of Warren RI., Hailey Hicks of Coventry RI., and William Hicks of Barrington RI., and his great grandchildren Avery Hicks and Brandon Hicks of Bristol RI. A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Saturday August 21, 2021 at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, 191 County Road, Barrington, RI 02806. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint John’s Episcopal Church, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
