Joan S. Galloway

Joan (Steere) Galloway, 84, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at St. Elizabeth’s Home in East Greenwich, RI. She was the beloved wife of the late David T. Galloway, to whom she was married for 45 years until his passing in 2014. Together they made their home in Scituate, RI for 57 years. Joan was the daughter of the late Henry and Frieda (Stamp) Steere and was raised at Steere Orchards in Greenville, RI. She is survived by her sisters Carolyn Briggs and Linda Larson, her brother, Jim Steere, and her sister-in-law, David’s sister, Anne Bowen. Joan was the devoted mother of Jana Redman and her husband, David; Taryn Galloway and her husband, Matthias Kolberg; and Ian Galloway and his wife, Kelly McMahan. She took immense pride in raising her three children and treasured the many trips she made to Georgia, Norway, and Texas to visit them and their families. Her greatest joy in life was her four beloved grandchildren: Oakley Redman, Anna Linnea and Aidan Kolberg, and Greta Galloway. She loved each of them beyond measure and delighted in spoiling them whenever she could. Joan was a graduate of North Providence High school (class of 1960) and the University of Rhode Island. She studied to become a registered dietitian and completed her hospital internship in Detroit, MI before starting a full-time position at Rhode Island Hospital. After several years of raising her children and working part-time in several different positions, Joan took another full-time registered dietitian position at the former Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket where she worked until retirement in 2006. She found joy in her profession and in living an active life filled with healthy cooking, regular walks and fitness classes, most recently at the Johnston Senior center. Joan was a long time, dedicated member of P.E.O., an organization promoting and raising money for women’s education. She held many leadership positions in P.E.O., including serving as the Northeast District president in 2013-2014. Additionally, she was a faithful volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s Home for over 20 years. Joan passionately gave her time and love to so many throughout her life. Calling hours for visitation will be Wednesday, August 5th from 5:00-7:00pm at Winfield and Sons Funeral Home, 571 W. Greenville Rd. Scituate. On August 6th at 11:00am a funeral service will take place at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 445 Elmwood Ave., Providence. A private burial will follow at Acotes Hill Cemetery, Chepachet, RI. Joan asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 445 Elmwood Ave., Providence, RI 02907; or to Saint Elizabeth Home, One Saint Elizabeth Way, East Greenwich, RI 02818.
